Free-Thai Leader Charupong Issues Open Letter - Calls Jakrapob's Weapons' Charge a "Fabrication"

We have received this open letter from the Secretary General of the anti-coup Free Thai movement, Charupong Ruangsuwan. His letter reflects on the repressive tactics of the Thai military regime and lambasts the "war weapons" accusations placed against the Free Thai movement's Executive Secretary, Jakrapob Penkair, by the junta's agents.

"Greeting to all freedom-loving Thai friends,

The very best weapons of ordinary, unarmed Thai people during the junta’s repression, is your sincerity and your love for justice and human dignity of all Thais.

Since the very first days of the military coup, the junta has attempted to fabricate many stories in order to destroy the faith in freedom and democracy of our Thai friends who’ve stood up against the repression. Most recently, the junta has pressed false “war weapon” charges against one of the founding members of our Free Thai organisation, Jakrapob Penkair. They have done so without any evidence.

This dirty tactic is no different from the one that the junta used against the students in the past. On October 6, 1976 at Thammasat University, they used fabricated war weapons “seizures” as their justification for massacring peaceful protesters. The passage of time revealed the truth and proved that these stories were fabricated deceits created to crush the people who were opposed to the military junta.

At the moment the dignity of the country and of Thai people has fallen to an unprecedented low level.  This dignity has been stolen by the junta, who are attempting to shut our eyes and ears to the truth and prevent us from being aware of our collective struggle against them. In addition the junta regime is desperate to prevent Thai people from knowing of the pressure the international community is placing upon them. The junta has shut-down TV stations and community radio stations and is attempting to control the remaining news content by stationing its soldiers at media broadcasters and outlets to ensure that only pro-junta news is produced. It has summoned and intimidated journalists, academics and even ordinary Thai citizens who use social media, in order to curtail freedoms of the press and to control dissemination of information.

Thais who love and want to protect freedom - and who do so without resorting to force of arms - are committed to telling the truth no matter what the profession, age, or gender of the persons involved. People should expose and utterly reject the junta’s prison of deceit, a creation designed only to subjugate the people.

We ask our supporters and any other persons drawn to the democratic ideals of the Free Thais’ movement to distribute information from our social media networks to their neighbours, friends, family members, brothers and sisters and even international organisations. We must make the truth echo loudly, so that those with a free conscience are reminded that the junta can’t just buy our friendship and love for the truth so cheaply, and thereby use such tactics to further persecute us.

My beloved Thai friends, we will continue working together to create a framework of ideas that can help take the country forwards towards democracy. Every Sunday, for the sake of freedom and humanity for all Thai people, we will distribute a Free Thais newsletter in order to tell the truth and fight against the deceit of the junta. And when the time comes, we will walk together, standing-tall with straight backs, filled with pride and belief in the equality of all humans, once again.

With faith in the power of democracy and of the people,

Charupong Ruangsuwan

Secretary-General of Free Thai organisation.

Jakrapob Penkair Statement on Junta's Claims - "I have no involvement in any kind of “armed” struggle".

I've just received the following statement from Jakrapob Penkair, the Executive Secretary of Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy (FT-HD) regarding Thailand's military regime charging him with being involved with the possession of "war weapons" and also revoking his and other pro-democracy leaders' passports. A Thai version of this statement will appear shortly.

"The charges levelled against me today by Thailand’s illegitimate coup regime reveal, once again, the desperation of the Generals and the Establishment they represent. The false claim that I am behind some kind of “armed element” is not only a fiction but yet another example of the injudiciousness of the fraudulent Thai junta.

Let me be clear - there is simply no evidence whatsoever to connect me to the junta’s seizure of arms and I would challenge them to produce such evidence. Of course, even the seizure of said arms has more than a whiff of suspicion about them. There has been no independent investigation regarding these arms’ seizures, no chain of evidence has been preserved and the kind of claims the junta are putting forward are so flimsy they would be washed away very quickly when subject to proper cross-examination.
As for any attempt to “extradite” me on such charges, the junta must know that no government on earth would succumb to their threats and that I would be given full access to any evidence they have concocted and also the platform to challenge such evidence.
For the record, I must state that I have no involvement in any kind of “armed” struggle. I believe fully in a political, social and cultural struggle secured in reality by the democratic will of the Thai people. The Generals and their Establishment masters know very well that if the democratic will of the Thai people is expressed, power will be removed from them and returned to more accountable and legal forms.
It's only two days ago our organisation was being dismissed as “irrelevant” by the junta. Now we face allegations of being behind a regime-concocted "armed struggle" along with attempts to curtail our rights to travel via the revocations of passports. These actions by the junta reveal only one thing - their increasingly obvious insecurity - something which will only grow in the days and weeks to come.
That’s why the only “judicial” vehicle they could use to expedite their false charges would be through their own military-run “courts” where due process and the rule of law have long been abolished in favour of despotism. It must be said that any and all cases coming before the military “courts” exist in the context of a form of jurisprudence that is little more than a theatre of the absurd, such is the lack of any form of legal rights.
At the moment the military and the forces they represent are the only agents engaged in any kind of illegitimate “armed” struggle against the will of the Thai people. Those who believe in democracy have no need to use force of arms as we are fully confident that the moment the franchise is returned to Thais the junta will be little more than an historical aberration.
I should add that the revocation of passports by the junta is not only another grotesque repressive act it also turns any Thai citizen who stands against the military regime into political refugees. Such revocations will further expose to the global community that the junta are little more than petulant tyrants operating far beyond the norms of international law.
We ask our supporters to remain steadfast and not be distressed or disheartened by the junta’s threats and games. The only action the junta have available to themselves is to attempt to crush the hopes and aspirations of ordinary Thais. Yet, with each turn of the repressive screw, the junta just further seal their own fate and will strengthen your resolve to return sovereignty to the Thai people."

BREAKING: Official Statement From UK Foreign Office on Harassment of UK Citizens by Thai Military Junta

Earlier today I blogged about unofficial comments made by the British Embassy in Bangkok regarding their stance on the ongoing targeting and harassment of UK citizens by the Thai military junta, their supporters and agents.

These comments have now been CONFIRMED as being accurate by the British government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The UK has now made it officially clear to the Thai military that they will not tolerate any further targeting of British nationals or others on British soil.

This is possibly the strongest statement yet released by any government regarding the junta's attempts to internationalise their campaign of repression.

Ambassador Mark Kent and the FCO deserve all our support for taking such a principled stance.

The following statement was sent to me by a Foreign Office spokesperson

We are aware of this case and understand the police are in touch with the individual.

The UK is committed to the freedom of speech and defends the right of individuals to express their views without the threat of intimidation or harassment.

Anyone in the UK who feels they are being threatened in any way should report it to the police.

We have made clear to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok and the Thai Embassy in London that we will not tolerate attempts to enforce Thai military decrees in the UK that are aimed at preventing freedom of expression.

EXCLUSIVE: British Embassy Rebukes Thai Military Junta for Harassing UK Citizens

I've just received a copy of comments made by the British Embassy in Thailand regarding the Thai military junta's harassment of British nationals in the UK. These comments were made in writing to a third-party whom wishes to remain anonymous at this point.

As for the background to the UK Embassy's comments, it is now on the record that the Thai military junta has made a point of singling out a British citizen of Thai heritage critical of the Thai monarchy,  Chatwadee Amornpat - aka "London Rose" - for "special attention" and has made numerous completely baseless and false claims that they are "extraditing" Rose from the UK to Thailand.

There are also a number of videos posted online which appear to target Rose in a harassment campaign. After posting one such video, the person involved later posted an image of themselves holding £5000 in cash, which led to some speculation that the source of such funds may have been the Thai military junta seeking to extend an harassment campaign into order to shutdown dissent in the wider Thai diaspora.

Either way, the UK Embassy in Bangkok seem to have made their position very clear - they will not tolerate the Thai military junta seeking to extend their repression onto British territory. The Embassy said that -
The UK is committed to freedom of speech and defends the right of individuals to express their views without the threat of intimidation or harassment.  We have discussed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok and the Thai Embassy in London.  We have made clear that we will not tolerate attempts to enforce Thai military decrees in the UK that are aimed at preventing freedom of expression.

Roasting People Alive: The Thai Army's Red Drum Massacres of the 1970s

Bangkok Post special publication magazine ”Oct 14, 1973 - People's Progress, 30 years on” dated 14 October 2003

The Red Drum massacres of 30 years ago

The Red Drum massacres of 30 years ago represent excesses in counter insurgency that no one wants to revisit. But memories die hard and a healthy way of living with the horrors is to admit them.
About 3,008 people - accused of being communist suspects - are believed to have died after being pushed down 200-litre red drums alive or semiconcious and incinerated. The atrocities began in military camps in a small village in Phattalung about two years before the events of October 13, 1973, and continued through 1975, according to a former special branch police officer.

To put to rest the souls of the villagers, thousands of people from the southern provinces of Phattalung, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat converged for religious rites at a rubber plantation in Ban Kho Lung, in Phattalung's Si Nakarin sub-district on April 10 this year.
The plantation housed two companies of soldiers, one from the Senanarong barracks in Songkhla, and another from the Ingkayuth Boriharn barracks in Pattani.
“It was the policy of the Thanom Kittikachorn government to decisively flush out communist insurgents,”said the former special branch police officer.
But the government never specified what “decisively” meant. While the soldiers at Ban Kho Lung resorted to pushing suspects down red drums before burning them, forces in Nakhon Si Thammarat killed entire households and left the bodies right there, he added.
“As subordinates, the officials merely followed orders. Mistakes were inevitable.”
Police also played their part in the drastic suppression, killing suspects based on lists sent from intelligence units, he confirmed. They sent on some of the suspects to the military camps at Ban Kho Lung. But the officer emphasized he never witnessed any of the red drum executions.
The suppression waged by the police and the military drove thousands of villagers into the arms of the outlawed Communist Party of Thailand.
Fon Silamul, now a provincial councilor, was one of them, his operational patch the Phu Banthad mountain range. He remembers how fear convinced him to join the party after soldiers and police visited the homes of his relatives and took the men for questioning at Ban Kho Lung camp.
When relatives went to visit the men at the camp two days later, they were told that some had been released but others were now dead. Not one ever returned home.
Mr. Fon said he could not remember a single man - “old or young” - remaining at home in the villages of Ban Na, Lamsin, Khao Khram, Ban Tone, Ban Loh Kwai, Ban Lam Nai, Ban Na Wong, Ban Rai Nua and Ban Kongla after news began to spread of the people accused of helping the CPT being burnt alive.
“What can villagers like us do when we are sandwiched between the government officials and the CPT? If we refused to cooperate with either side we would be in great danger.
Taking sides with the CPT seemed to be the best way to survive in the circumstances when the police and security officers could not provide us with protection and everyhting was a real mess.”
Mr Fon remembers the hooligans and thieves from other areas who came to steal cattle most nights until there was not a single animal left in his village. The police feared for their own safety because they were outnumbered by these gangs. They refused to respond to calls to root out the thieves.
When people could not rely on government officials, they turned to members of the CPT united front who had settled in the area about “nine years earlier” (or in the early 1960s). These men and women promised to save them from military atrocities and maintain law and order.
Things were made worse for many villages as the lists of CPT members and hooligans prepared by the village headmen often contained the names of those with whom the headmen was in conflict. These were arrested but none were executed before 1970. Most underwnet “re-education”.
The mass killings reportedly began in 1970, when rangers with the Special Task Forces in Lop Buri and troops from Ingkayuth Borihan barracks were sent to crush communist insurgents.
When Mr. Fon and other villagers living near the Ban Ko Lung camp were asked how they knew those arrested later became victims of the flaming red drums, they said they could hear the roar of military trucks - used to drown out the screams of those being burnt alive - throughout the evenings after communist suspects were taken to the camp. The villagers would smell human flesh burning and see the fumes rise into the night sky.
“At the same time, some arrested villagers from Surat Thani were thrown from helicopters over the Phu Banthad mountain range,” Mr Fon alleges.
Asked if they had proof of the mass killing, Mr. Fon and other villagers said they found human skulls and bones scattered along Klong Muay, adjacent to Ban Kho Lung camp, after it was closed in late 1975.
“Many children used the skulls to play footbll and we were told that ash and other remains were dumped in Lamphan, a part of Thalae Luang in Phattalung.”
The people of Phattalung did not know much about the Red Drum atrocities. All they knew was that soldiers were killing communists because they were at war with government troops.
He said that the figure of 3,008 people killed in Red Drum cases was compiled by a committee attached to the pro-democracy Student Federation of Thailand in 1975 who were sent to visit the area to collect information on the victims. There are no known copies of this report available now.
The villagers said they bore no grudges against those who brought so much terror into their lives. They had no desire to take revenge against police and the military.
“Let bygones be bygones, and let us patch up our differences of ideology,” Mr Fon said. “I fully understand that the troops involved in the Red Drum case had to follow orders and the villagers thought they were fighting for their survival and for a better life. No-one was really at fault as it was very common to see losses on both sides when each side claimed to fight for a better ruling system.”
For the former special branch police officer, the events of 30 years ago may be seen as a case of over-reaction by the state. But for state officials then, danger lurked in every corner, especially in Kong La district, which they could not penetrate, not even when the deaths started mounting.
The Red Drum massacres ended in 1975, two years after the fall of the Thanom regime, and when Thailand established diplomatic relations with China, the officer said.
Though memories of he events of Ban Kho Lung are fading, most villagers who survived the horrors still refuse to talk about it.
Their only desire, they say, is to make merit in honour of those who perished in the red drums because “when those people were killed, they had no chance to see he monks for their last blessing”.
“We want the Red Drum case to be a lesson and not forgotten by our next generation that their ancestors sacrificed their lives for today's democracy.” one said.
A group of villagers has already bought a piece of land for 450,000 baht to build an information centre and monument to those killed, a plan that apparently has run into opposition from state authorities, the former special branch officer among them.
But how else to repose the ghosts of the Red Drums?

Declaration of the Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy (FT-HD)

I have received both a video-taped and written declaration in English from the newly established "Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy (FT-HD)". The video-taped version is read out by Red Shirt leader and former Thai government minister, Jakrapob Penkair

"Dear Fellow Thais,

It is now tragically evident that Thailand has returned, once again, to a vicious cycle of absolute dictatorial governance. The military junta regime that enacted this - in the name of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) led by the Army chief, Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha - has used force to seize power from a democratically-elected civilian government. This is an outrageous act that has violated both Thai and international laws.

It is clear that the junta’s actions are nothing but a grand larceny. What they have stolen, however, are your most precious sovereignty and fundamental rights that are legally guaranteed under democratic governance. It’s impossible to put a price on these rights because they are directly equivalent to basic human dignity - a treasure whose value is immeasurable.

Moreover, the junta has violated the rule of law, abused democratic principles, and destroyed your rights, liberties, and human dignity. These are their most destructive crimes. The junta’s attempts to propagandise these criminal acts as legitimate are predictable - with their false promise to return “peace and order”  - being nothing more than a deception wherein they attempt to rationalise and excuse their criminal actions. Their ultimate aim is to attempt to persuade ordinary Thai people to believe that dictatorship is superior to democracy. This game plan of demeaning and discrediting your sovereignty is one that has always been played out by Thai dictators and, as always, it has failed and will fail.

We condemn all the arbitrary and repressive violations of the rights and liberties of Thais and foreigners by the Thai military regime and its allies in their continued attempts to turn Thailand into a “state of fear”. The military regime have also claimed that at some point they will transfer sovereign power back to civilian authorities. What they mean is that that will have created a new puppet structure whose sole purpose will be to re-entrench anti-democratic elements into Thailand’s body-politic and to sabotage the development of Thai democracy. Any such structure will need to be removed before a more democratic and civilised society can be built.

On behalf of Thais worldwide who are committed to the principles of democracy and universal human rights, I hereby announce our complete and total refutation of the legitimacy of the NCPO. The military regime and its conspirators have no legitimate power whatsoever to govern the country’s economy and society.

Furthermore, we will do everything in our power to prevent the re-entrenchment of anti-democratic elements in Thailand, to defend all forms of freedom, to demand respect in all forms of human rights, and to establish a full democracy as permanent pillar of Thai society.

In order for Thais to establish a full democracy in which sovereign power lies fully with the people, we again completely refute the legitimacy of the Thai military regime and officially announce the establishment of the “Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy (FT-HD) on this day Tuesday, June 24th, 2014. This organisation will now become the centre for all Thais who possess an unyielding desire for full democracy, in full compliance with the principles of democracy, universal human rights, international laws, and non-violence.

The term “Free Thai” or “Seri Thai” - with its connections to the resistance movement during World War II - has a deep resonance with ordinary Thais, reflecting their genuine desires for freedom and dignity. We are fortunate today that Thais have such an historical role model in order to struggle against yet another oppressor. And our oppressors need to be clear - we will not remain inactive and accept the imposed order and we will fight together until victory is fully realised.

Colleagues in Thailand and other nations around the world have therefore agreed to pursue the following initial goals for the establishment of the “Organisation of Free Thai for Human Rights”

1. To oppose the military dictatorship and its aristocratic network, and establish the
people’s complete and unchallenged sovereignty;

2. To restore and strengthen Thai democracy so that it becomes the stable founding
pillar of the Thai state;

3. To guarantee and nurture respect for human dignity, equality, freedom, and peace;

4. To promote a free and fair economy;

5. To reform Thai culture so that its values are fully consistent with democracy;

6. To fully develop and improve the quality of life for all Thai citizens

I hereby announce the establishment of the Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy (FT-HD). Our struggle will become possible when all groups and sectors work hard and actively together so that we can meet our common goals.

Announced on Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

Secretary General"
